Threads solo show by Mark Elliot-Ranken at Disorder Gallery

Leda and the Swan
Suppose you came as an explorer into an unknown country with a language quite strange to you. In what circumstances would you say that the people there gave order“Suppose you came as an explorer into an unknown country with a language quite strange to you. In what circumstances would you say that the people there gave orders, understood them, rebelled against them and so on. The common behaviour of mankind is the system of reference by means of which we interpret an unknown language.”
- Ludwig Wittgenstein Philosophical Investigations
Wittgenstein's words inspired Mark Elliot-Ranken's latest series of abstracts, varied in scale, subject matter and in the unique approach of Mark's distinctive visual 'language'.
According to Mark “To do as Wittgenstein asks us to do, that is create or at least try and interpret that ‘unknown language’ especially in regard to the terrain of our inner world is to pick up the threads of our own self…that which makes ‘our-self’. Such a language is a tool for exploration rather than simply communication.”
Mark Elliot-Ranken's Threads opens Thursday June 6th from 6-8pm and runs through Saturday June 22nd at Disorder Gallery corner Stanley and Bourke Street Darlinghurst.

In Translation - Group Show at Verge Gallery, University of Sydney

Interactions 1 and 2 by Bernadette Smith at Verge Gallery

In Translation Group Show at Verge
Fiona Davies, Merryn Hull, Nerine Martini, Bernadette Smith, and Eila Vinwynn
To translate is to convert something from one form into another; aiding communication and meaning across languages, times, cultures, or mediums. In Translation brings together the work of five postgraduate artists from Sydney College of the Arts: Fiona Davies, Merryn Hull, Nerine Martini, Bernadette Smith, and Eila Vinwynn. As each artist translates their ideas across different mediums, meanings are continually challenged and restructured. Their investigations range from the refraction of light to material transformations, from structures of language to the intersection between life and death.
Curated by students currently studying the Masters of Art Curating at the University of Sydney, In Translation coincides with three further exhibitions at Sydney College of the Arts, which feature each artist in more depth. With this collaboration across campuses comes the movement and ‘translation’ of artworks and ideas from one space to another, and the consideration of each artist, curator and viewer as both ‘translator’ and meaning-maker.
